Bound documents – Which one is right for you?
If you want to say more than is possible on a flyer or folded leaflet then you’ll need a bound booklet or document. Bound documents have many uses including: Brochures, Magazines, Catalogues, Paperback books, Reference books, Manuals and Reports. When it comes to brochure or book printing there’s a lot to consider including the type of paper you’ll use, the size of your booklet, and the best type of binding for your document.
At DigitalPrintingIreland.ie we offer a fully comprehensive booklet printing service and that includes giving professional advice to our customers. Document binding is a subject we’re often asked about and below you’ll find the answers to some of the most common questions.
What are the different types of binding?
The three main types of binding are saddle stitched, wiro bound and perfect bound. Saddle stitched booklets use staples to hold the pages together. Wiro bound uses a spiral wire fed through holes punched along the rear edge of each page and perfect binding uses flexible glue to bind the page edges to a spine.
How much do bound documents cost?
The cost of a bound document depends on the size of the document, the number of pages and type of binding (as well as the quantity printed of course).
When should I use saddle stitched booklets?
You can use saddle stitched booklets for any publication of up to 48 printed pages. The pages are laid out as spreads (four pages printed on both sides) then folded and stapled along the spine. The method produces a professional finish at a low cost making it a popular choice for company brochures, reports, menus and magazines.
When should I use wiro bound documents?
Customers use wiro bound documents for reference books, recipe books and company reports. You can have up to 360 printed pages and the method of feeding wire through punched holes allows wiro bound documents to lie flat when open or fold completely back. This makes them perfect for manuals or presentation documents that you can refer to and read while using both hands for something else.
When should I use perfect bound books?
You can use perfect bound books for any publication of between 40 and 700 pages. The PUR adhesive used to bind the pages to the spine is strong, durable and flexible. The cover is wrapped around the block of pages and glued onto the rear edge. The spine is printed and squared off so perfect bound books close completely flat making them easy to stack and store. Perfect binding is used for hardback or paperback books as well as magazines, reports, catalogues and brochures.
